Heb Mechanical & Electrical Secures £12 Million Southgate 2 Project at University of Huddersfield

We are proud to announce that Heb Mechanical & Electrical's Sheffield team has secured a significant project at the University of Huddersfield, partnering with Kier Construction. This high-profile project, valued at circa £12 million, involves the construction of a 5-storey mixed-use building, named Southgate 2, in the heart of Huddersfield. The building is being designed and constructed to WELL Building Standards, a global benchmark for buildings that focus on the health and well-being of their occupants through sustainable, energy-efficient, and human-centred design.

The Southgate 2 development will feature a variety of tailored spaces, each designed to serve the University’s needs across healthcare, teaching, and innovation.

The building’s floor plan includes:

  • Ground Floor: A state-of-the-art NHS area, providing advanced healthcare facilities.
  • 1st Floor: PACS labs and practical teaching spaces, offering cutting-edge environments for student education and research.
  • 2nd Floor: Dental health facilities, designed to support dental teaching and clinical services.
  • 3rd Floor: A shell & core space, reserved for future fit-out by other contractors.
  • 4th Floor: An innovation centre, featuring labs and flexible working spaces for research and development.
  • Roof: An external plantroom, housing critical mechanical equipment that supports the building’s sustainable operations.

Scope of Work

Heb Mechanical & Electrical will be responsible for delivering the full range of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) services throughout the Southgate 2 building. Our scope includes the installation of energy efficient heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as advanced electrical power and lighting systems to ensure the facility operates to the highest standards. The project will also feature the installation of state of the art fire alarms, life safety systems, and water services to meet the rigorous safety and performance criteria expected of a WELL-certified building.

We are particularly excited about our role in this development, as it aligns with our ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable, innovative solutions that positively impact communities. The WELL Building Standard focuses on creating spaces that improve the health and well being of occupants, and we are thrilled to contribute to such a forward thinking project.

This project is a significant achievement for our Sheffield team, further strengthening our presence in the region and our relationship with Kier Construction and the University of Huddersfield. By taking on the mechanical and electrical elements of this development, we are helping to ensure that the University can continue to provide top tier facilities for education, healthcare, and innovation.

We look forward to progressing with the Southgate 2 project and working closely with our partners to deliver a facility that will serve the University and the community for years to come. Stay tuned for more updates as we bring this ambitious development to life.
