Heb M&E Begins Work on Southgate 2 for the University of Huddersfield

We’re proud to announce that Heb M&E has officially begun work on site at the University of Huddersfield, delivering the full mechanical and electrical installation for the University’s new Southgate 2 development. Appointed by Kier Construction, this scheme represents a major milestone in our ongoing partnership with Kier and reinforces our growing presence in the higher education sector. The project is strategically important not just in terms of scale, but also in showcasing Heb M&E’s turnkey capabilities in designing and delivering complex building services within live institutional environments.

Southgate 2 is part of a wider programme of investment by the University, focused on transforming its city-centre campus into a more connected, energy-efficient, and accessible learning environment. The new facility will provide over 6,800m² of high-quality teaching, research and support spaces, designed with flexibility and sustainability in mind. Once complete, the building will offer cutting-edge resources for both staff and students, helping to enhance the academic experience and meet the evolving needs of higher education in a modern world. It’s a scheme that reflects both technical ambition and community impact, values we share deeply.

Our scope of work covers the full spectrum of mechanical and electrical services. This includes the installation of energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and cooling systems, along with public health services such as water supply and drainage. On the electrical side, we’re delivering complete LV distribution networks, power and lighting systems, emergency lighting, and integration of fire alarms, life safety systems, and access control. The building will also benefit from a smart Building Management System (BMS) to ensure long-term efficiency, performance monitoring, and ease of maintenance, all designed with future-proofing in mind.

We’re really pleased to be working on this project with Kier Construction. It’s great to be involved at such an early stage, where our input can add real value to how services are coordinated and delivered. Southgate 2 is a well-considered scheme that balances sustainability with flexibility, and our role is to ensure the building systems perform just as well as the architecture. It’s a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate the strength of our delivery team and our ability to deliver complex M&E packages on large-scale educational facilities. We’re proud to be supporting a project that will have a lasting positive impact on both the campus and the wider Huddersfield community.

While we’re still in the early stages on site, the mobilisation phase has been a strong start, with early coordination meetings, site surveys, and design workshops already underway. We’re working closely with Kier Construction and project stakeholders to ensure a seamless integration of our services with the main construction programme. Health and safety remain our top priority, and detailed planning has gone into ensuring safe working practices from day one.

As we move into the main phases of installation, our focus will remain on quality delivery, technical coordination, and meeting key programme milestones. We’re excited about the journey ahead and look forward to delivering another standout project for the education sector.
