Basil Ward Refurbishment Project at Chesterfield Royal Hospital
- Client:
- Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
- Main contractor:
- Vinci Construction
The Heb Group, in collaboration with Vinci Construction, successfully completed a comprehensive refurbishment of the 30-bed Basil Ward at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
This project aimed to upgrade all systems and create a modern, flexible care environment while minimizing disruption to adjacent live areas.
Project Details
As part of Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s ongoing ward upgrade programme, the project involved:
- Stripping out existing systems and installing state-of-the-art solutions.
- Upgrading lighting and power systems, fire alarms, data and access control, nurse call systems, heating and ventilation, domestic water services, medical gas systems, air conditioning, smoke dampers, building management systems (BMS), and sanitaryware and drainage.
The newly refurbished Basil Ward now offers a modern, flexible environment with associated utility and nurse base spaces, accommodating up to 30 patients and enabling clinical staff to deliver high-level medical care in a welcoming setting.
Challenges and Achievements
Despite the logistical challenges of working within a live hospital environment and ensuring services were connected to existing infrastructure, the project was completed ahead of schedule.
Close collaboration with the Trust’s estates and clinical teams facilitated careful planning, resulting in minimal disruption to adjacent areas.
Not only was this project achieved ahead of schedule and safely, but also with an absolute minimum number of snags, most of which have already been resolved! I would like to thank everyone for their commitment to achieving these goals. It’s been a pleasure working with contractors who have such a 'can do' attitude. Well done!
Mark Chitty, Project Manager at Vinci Construction
This project, delivered safely and to a high standard of quality, ensures that Chesterfield Royal Hospital’s clinical staff and patients have access to a state-of-the-art care space for years to come.
